Local plants in bloom
Spring has sprung and it certainly has a way of drawing you into the garden, especially with a number of local plants now in full bloom. I'm sure you have seen the Sticky Everlastings (Xerochrysum viscosum) and Clustered Everlastings (Chrysocephalum semipapposum) lighting up the roadsides and local reserves with their bold yellow flowerheads.
A fun fact: As with other everlasting daisies, the bracts around the flowers are coloured, and look like petals. However, unlike petals they do not quickly wither after flowering. This means we get to enjoy these for a few months yet (and also explains their common name rather aptly). These plants not only brighten up Djaara Country and our gardens but are also important for local wildlife, supporting the biodiversity that we all value so deeply.
We’re sharing some photos from Tim's garden in late November, showcasing local (and some cultivar) plants in flower, and we hope that they put across a little bit of the awe that we feel whenever we are up close and observing nature at work!
Spring Garden Maintenance Tips
This time of year offers great opportunities to give your garden a little extra care. Here are a few key maintenance tasks for native gardens in Spring:
Pruning & Deadheading: You can trim back spent flowers and tidy up your plants to encourage new growth.
Fertilising: We like to give younger plants a liquid tonic every 2-4 weeks, particularly in dry periods. The plants will thank you if you avoid doing this in the heat of the day - so either morning if you are an 'up-and-at-em' type or in the evening if you are Tim.
Weeding & Mulching: Keep weeds under control and add mulch to help retain moisture during warmer days.
Watering: Native plants are adapted to our local climate, but consistent watering during dry spells will help them thrive (it's a very dry Spring! Tim won't stop talking about it to anyone that will listen).
